ProfessionalismProfessionalism includes attendance and class participation. It also includes assignment submission. For this course, professionalism will be worth 200 points. It is vital that future teachers adhere to professional and ethical standards, and this course is an opportunity to practice those skills.
Total points: 200 Written Response Paper and Discussion LeaderFuture teachers will complete 8 written response papers with select topics from the reading materials on historical and legal foundations of special education, characteristics of diverse learners, interventions, and practices. Papers will be approximately 1-2 pages in length, with a cover and reference page. They should include at least one reference to the text, and one to a peer reviewed article. Each paper is worth 25 points.
In addition to the papers, future teachers will each select two weeks to be discussion leaders. For these weeks, future teachers should also include 5 discussion questions, and should be prepared to lead a discussion related to the information in the chapter. They may wish to do an activity or a powerpoint/presentation, but it is not necessary. Each discussion leader opportunity is worth 25 points as well. Total points: 250 |
Online Discussion QuestionsThis course will utilize this website for a weekly online discussion question. As we will meet once a week, as opposed to twice a week, this forum will allow for more in depth coverage of material. Online discussion questions need to be submitted prior to the class meeting. So, for the first week's class, there will not be a discussion question. The question will be posted and explained during class, and then must be responded to prior to the class meeting the following week (preferably 24 hours.) There will be 8 discussion questions, worth 20 points each.
Total points: 160 Disability Research Paper and PresentationFuture teachers will write and present a research paper based on a review of historical and current legislation relating to students with disabilities and educaitonal practice. The paper will describe characteristics and learning styles of individuals with a specific disability (to be selected by future teacher). Related instructional challenges and suggested educational strategies should be included with a focus on meeting student needs in the general education setting. Age group should be specified. Paper must be in APA style, and should be 5-6 pages in length with a cover and reference page. A minimum of three peer reviewed articles should be included.
Total points: 250 Final Exam: IEP Case Study and CritiqueThroughout the course, future teachers will have the opportunity to review and write components of the individualized education plan. Each of these workshops will lead up to the final exam, which will include components of a case study review as well as an IEP write-up.
